Timmy David Shows, son of Elaine and Paul Shows, was born on October 5, 1953, in Bonaire Hospital in Compton, California.
He grew up, along with his brother Tommy, in the city of Rowland Heights, where he graduated from John A. Rowland High School in 1971.
He attended Christian Chapel in the city of Walnut, California, where he eventually became a church youth counselor.
Timmy met his future wife, Diana Kyler, from nearby Diamond Bar, at a spring youth camp at the Colorado River. They married at Christian Chapel in 1976, and, in 1978, Timmy began working as a machinist for Gilmore Envelopes in downtown Los Angeles.
Diana gave birth to their first child, a son they named Nathan, in 1980, but he tragically did not survive delivery. In 1982, Diana gave birth to another son, Nick, at Queen of the Valley Hospital in West Covina.
In 1985, the family moved to West Covina, where Timmy and Diana became Home Bible Fellowship leaders at their church. Their family grew when, in 1987, Brittany Megan Shows was born at Kaiser Permanente Hospital in Bellflower, California.
In 1989, Timmy’s employer, Gilmore Envelopes, closed down. Timmy and Diana saw this as an opportunity to draw upon Timmy’s love of gardening to start their own landscaping business, which they named HIS Gardening Service—an acronym for Honesty Integrity Services, and a reference to their Christian faith.
In 1998, the family moved into Diana’s childhood home in the city of Diamond Bar, where Nick and Brittany grew up. The family landscaping business continued for 12 years.
In 2004 Timmy and Diana decided to retire from the business due to Timmy’s ongoing health conditions. By the next year, their now-grown children moved out of the family home, and Timmy and Diana decided to sell the home and move in with Timmy’s mother in Anaheim, California, in order to provide her with caregiving assistance. They remained in the home after Timmy’s mother passed.
In retirement, Timmy spent most of his time in his garden, growing many vegetables and extremely hot chili peppers while listening to his music. He also began a hobby of computer repair, and continued this work for years until vision problems no longer allowed it.
Timmy enjoyed watching basketball and was a devoted Lakers fan during the Shaquille O’Neal and Kobe Bryant era.
In addition, Timmy was an active deep-sea fisherman, as his father had been. His father use to charter boats in San Diego's King Harbor, and had a boat called The Spirit of Adventure. His grandson observed that not only was Timmy a actual fisherman, but, as a long-serving church youth counselor, he was also a fisher of men (Matthew 4:19-20).
