Eura (Boyd) Matthews was born in Bunkie, Louisiana on June 18, 1932, to the late Irma Mcray Taylor and Charlie Taylor. Eura was the youngest of three girls Gloria, Betty and Eura and baby brother, Charles. In 1943, Eura and her family moved from Louisiana to Oakland. At an early age, Eura took on the nickname of “Baby”, which many of you more commonly know her as.
Baby attended and graduated from Oakland Technical High School in 1951. She met and married Jasper Paul Driver in 1954. They had one son, John Phillip Driver. Baby and Jasper later divorced in 1965. In 1967, Baby met and married Ira “Matt” Matthews. In 1968, Matt, Baby, and John Phillip moved from Oakland to Los Angeles, then to Inglewood. Eura and Matthew remained married for close to 35 years until Matthews passing in 2002. Baby and Matthew, who worked for Continental Airlines with travel benefits, spent many wonderful times together and as a family traveled all over the states, vacationing in Hawaii, 8 different times. In the summer of 1974, on a mom/son challenge Eura and John Phillip flew from Los Angeles to Chicago, attended an afternoon movie, had a great dinner and then flew back to Los Angeles that same night, just to do it.
After arriving in Inglewood, Baby united with Second Mt. Nebo Missionary Baptist Church. She was a faithful member of Second Mt. Nebo for more than 25 years until her health began to fail. While Eura enjoyed traveling, undoubtedly her favorite past time was Las Vegas and Reno Nevada. The Dollar $$$ Slot Machines at Lady Luck, El Cortez, Harrah’s and several other Las Vegas and Reno casinos were her favorites. Eura and Matthew really enjoyed their Las Vegas runs, sometimes just to the State Line for 6 hours, sometimes a bus ride from the Greyhound Station on Western. Eura enjoyed visiting her family in Oakland, Seaside and Houston Texas. While visiting in Oakland, Eura, her Aunt Gladys, husband Fields and sister Betty Gibson regularly visited their money $$$ in Reno Nevada.
Eura was preceded in death by her husband Ira “Matt” Matthews, parents Irma and Charlie, sister Betty Gibson and brother Charles Taylor. Eura leaves to cherish her precious memories, son, John Phillip Driver, wife Dawn Driver, sister Gloria Kruger, husband Karl Kruger, 9 grandchildren and 6 great-grandchildren. She also leaves a host of nephews and nieces, cousins and friends, far too numerous to mention, but dearly loved just as much
